Donald Trump deserves credit for ending Israel’s bombing of Gaza.
He “pulled the rug” from under Netanyahu, by telling him that he needed to agree to Trump’s 20-point plan. The threat was to significantly decrease US support for Israel’s military if he didn’t agree.
I’m sure that Netanyahu was in a state of shock when Trump made the threat. Having always taken Trump’s 100% support for granted, Trump gave a “not so fast” vote of conditional support instead. Based on news reports I have seen, I would guess that right now, Trump is more popular in Israel than Netanyahu.
Meanwhile several Arab countries and Turkey pressed Hamas to accept the plan. For the most part, Hamas did so. But Hamas tried to undermine its acceptance by arming its members to attack clans in Gaza that could possibly undercut Hamas’ influence.
With that, Trump threatened Hamas with direct U.S. military involvement to disarm Hamas completely. So far, so good.
So why didn’t Biden do this? Most likely because there would be such howling from pro-Israel groups and Republicans for being less than fully supportive of Israel. Israel would probably refer to Biden as being a traitor.
But with the idea coming from Trump, Republicans don’t object, Democrats are pleased to see the bombing stop, and Netanyahu has the sense not to call Trump disloyal and risk losing US support.
Only Trump could do this. Glad he did.
